One BIG reason for the wait - optics. Sometimes, perfecting the optics on a camera system takes a lot longer than we'd like. But we have to admit, it was well worth waiting for.

The Canon EOS R is part of a new mounting system called the RF mount. It's cutting edge, 54mm diameter design, enables use of lenses with larger rear elements, bringing the lenses closer to the sensor. Why would this be important? It improve the sharpness of your photos and allows for more compact lens designs. The RF mount also has a 12 pin connection which speeds up the communication process between camera and lens. 

Whether you wish to invest in the new optics of the RF lenses or perhaps adapt your old EF or EF-S lenses, Canon has three lens adapters that give you the ability to use any EF or EF-S mount lens on the Canon EOS R. You can go with the standard adapter, adapter with control ring or the adapter with the built in, "drop-in" filter feature. 

The lens options are expanding.

Currently, the Canon EOS R has several lens options, some not available for purchase yet, but they've been officially announced and are shipping soon. Here's a list:

1. 50mm f/1.2 L

2. 35mm f/1.8 Macro

3. 24-240mm f.4-6.3

4. 85mm f/1.2 L

5. 24-105 f/4 L

6. 28-70mm f/2 L

There's also the 15-35mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 that were just announced and are to be available for purchase soon.

Canon's RF lenses deliver the highest degree of performance. The wide aperture results in an insanely beautiful, creamy bokeh that you're sure to fall in love with, while still keeping your subject incredibly sharp. Plus, paired with the 30 megapixel, full frame CMOS sensor of the Canon EOS R with a dual-pixel autofocus system, guarantees fast, accurate AF. 

The low-light performance is out of this world...

The EOS R also has an ISO range of 100-40,000 for still photography and 100-12,800 for 4k video shooting, which means it handles low-light situations remarkably well. As a photographer or videographer you have more creative range with natural lighting, without worrying about getting digital noise or grain.

The design is unique.

One of the first things people noticed when Canon released product images before the Canon EOS R was officially on the market, was the back multi-function bar. The multi-function bar is unique because it's unlike what we've seen on other full frame mirrorless models, or DSLR cameras for that matter.

One of the other unique design features of the Canon RF system is the control ring built into all of their RF lenses. It allows for seamless, customizable control over a handful of settings within your menu, without having to take your eye away from the viewfinder. This gives you more time to focus on the composition of your photos rather than digging through the menus to change your settings.

Canon brings in FV mode, changing the game for priority mode shooters. 

One of the most notable features that many may overlook when shooting with the Canon EOS R, is Canon's FV mode. The FV mode acts as a program auto mode, where your ISO, shutter speed and aperture are all set to auto. Until, you perhaps want to change one, two or all of your exposure settings, you can do so with a flick of a dial, without having to leave FV mode. This is just another feature that Canon has added to try to speed up the process of preparing your camera's settings so you can jump right in and focus on composing your shots. 

Given the optics alone, the Canon EOS R and RF mount system, in our opinion, is worth the upgrade. That and it includes new features that will increase the productivity, effeciency and quality of your shooting.
